I wrote a piece I thought I’d share. Part of my ongoing processing of the life long anti-racism work we all so desperately need.

It’s called, “We Need A Redemption Song:”

Blood spills in cities tonight,
Like sacrifice.

May not only the innocent be spared.
Spared not for their good deeds or being at home,
But because they were built bone of thine bone.

Embodied divinity, blessed at birth,                                                                                      a sign and symbol of their inherent worth.

God send your Holy Spirit to move                                                                                    and mold us into Courageous People.                                                                                 I’m not necessarily talking about a church,                                                                     and definitely no steeple.

No ‘powers that be.’                                                                                                                 It’s the People that set themselves free.
Freedom was All of ours to begin with,
No need to bring your god into it.

Unless you want to. Or need to.
Or because that is true for you.

Just don’t turn this into another Abraham and Isaac story –
a patriarch so in fear, he’s willing to spill his son’s blood and mayhap the daughters of Others. For some god’s Glory.

We need a redemption song.
Black and Brown Lives lived long.
