Dis-membered in Amerika (1 Corinthians 12:12-31)

This Sunday’s lectionary includes 1 Corinthians 12:12-31, a text often used to describe Christian unity in the midst of diversity, as well as the distribution of power and skills among members. But what about the question in verse 19: “If all were a single member, where would the body be?”

The texts’ emphasis on the ‘less honorable’ and ‘less respectable’ (as defined by society) ultimately points to this verse: “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it.”

We are living in a dis-membered Americas where black and brown, queer and trans* are beaten and brutalized, violated and disappeared. I think Radical Martin had something to say about that. #MLKerryday
